Hugh Henry Brackenridge requested and obtained a letter from Commonwealth of Pennsylvania granting him the rank of school. In 1787 he was given the rank of college and became Western University of Pennsylvania . During its inception, University of Pittsburgh has been a private institution until 1966 became a member of the Commonwealth System of Higher Education
In the 1830s, the university is facing a severe financial pressure to force the abandonment of its traditional liberal education in favor of a more vocational training . The decision to commit to provide a liberal education nearly ended college, but still persevered, though it did not have the support of the city and the state.
The buildings of the university, along with most of their records and archives were destroyed in the great fire of 1845 that killed twenty city blocks Pittsburgh. Classes are kept temporarily in giving Trinity Church until a new building was built in Duquesne Way ..
In 1891 the college moved its campus to the city of Allegheny.
In 1892, Western Pennsylvania Medical College joined the University of Pittsburgh and a year later, in 1893, the University graduated its first African-American , William Dammond . The first graduation of women took place at the end of the nineteenth century, when the sisters got their degree and Stella Margaret Stein.
In the early twentieth century this institution moved its campus from Oakland to Pittsburgh. It was then that he began calling University of Pittsburgh. The construction was financed by donations and thanks campaign to collect dimes to children from the local school. Gradually was finishing the building known as the cathedral of knowledge , a great tower became the tallest university building in the world.
In the 20th century, epidemics of polio began to spread across the United States and other industrialized countries. Fear of contracting polio grew wildly and led to the closure of many public facilities. Meanwhile, Dr. Jonas Salk had created the research laboratory of the virus in the basement of the university, which today is Salk Hall. In 1955, Salk developed the vaccine and in 1962 the number of infected is reduced. Advances in immunology and developing vaccines from University of Pittsburgh h is considered one of the most important achievements of scientific and medical history.
In 1966, University of Pittsburgh Pennsylvania was designated as a state university.
